Plot summary
At the Vinča Nuclear Institute near Belgrade, Dragoslav Popović leads a secret project in October 1958, during the Cold War crisis. An incident at the reactor exposes him and his colleagues to a lethal dose of radiation. Yugoslav secret police move the men to the Curie clinic in Paris, where a French medical team led by Doctor Mate finds their condition critical and their days numbered. Mate has spent his life opposing nuclear weapons and despises the project the Yugoslav physicists worked on. He proposes replacing their bone marrow with marrow from donors unrelated to them, an intervention that no one has attempted.
