Plot summary
Sam Clayton manages a department store, and he likes to help people. After hearing Rev. Daniels preach, he aids anyone who asks: his wife Lu's brother Claude lives with the Claytons rent free, the neighbors the Butlers borrow his car for a vacation, and he pays for its repairs and lets the mechanic come to dinner. Sam lends $5,000 to Mr. and Mrs. Adams for the gas station they bought without telling Lu, and the money the Claytons were saving toward a house is gone. At the store his boss, H.C. Borden, wants more selling and less socializing, and clerk Shirley Mae cries on his shoulder when her romance breaks up.

- Filming of Good Sam was interrupted on October 23, 1947, when star Gary Cooper was called to testify as a friendly witness before the House Un-American Activities Committee.
- After the shoot, director Leo McCarey filmed extra scenes in January 1948 so Good Sam could have two possible endings, then had preview audiences say which they preferred; the unused ending is unknown.
- For the scene where a Salvation Army marching band walks Gary Cooper's drunken character home, director Leo McCarey put together a 25-piece band made up of students from several Los Angeles-area high schools.
