Plot summary

In the far north of Siberia, mammoth hunters make a dangerous journey each year to the remote New Siberian Islands, digging into the earth for the tusks of extinct mammoths, ivory that sells for high prices in China. Peter Grigoriev, a professional hunter, and Spira Sleptsov, an unemployed stoker, are pulled between the chance of a spectacular find and their belief that the mammoths' remains should not be disturbed. Thawing permafrost is exposing whole mammoth carcasses, which draw scientific interest. Semyon Grigoriev, Peter's brother, is a paleontologist and directs the mammoth museum in Yakutsk; he wants to clone a woolly mammoth, and with his wife, Lena Grigorieva, he visits a South Korean company that clones dogs. Young researchers meet in Boston, and a Harvard professor of genetics works on editing an elephant to resemble a mammoth.
