Molly Picon
Biography
Molly Picon was an American actress who began in Yiddish theater and silent film and later took character roles in English-language productions. Born in New York City in 1898, she moved with her family to Philadelphia at age three. She performed in the Yiddish theater district for seven years and opened the Molly Picon Theatre in 1931. Her English-language stage debut came in 1940, and she starred on Broadway in Milk and Honey in 1961. Her first major English-language movie role in Come Blow Your Horn (1963) brought a Golden Globe nomination, and she played Yente the Matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof (1971). On television she had a recurring part on Car 54, Where Are You? and appeared in For Pete's Sake (1974), and she earned a Daytime Emmy nomination in 1983 for an episode of Young People's Specials. Her final films included The Cannonball Run (1981) and Cannonball Run II (1984).
