Plot summary

Captain Glen (Lucky) Singer and Connie Phipps, his co-pilot and romantic partner, are worried that a merger will cost them their jobs at Quest Airlines. Riding along to check Lucky's procedures is chief pilot George Bouchard, Connie's former boyfriend, who insists on strict use of the computerized systems while Lucky prefers his instincts. Soon after the flight leaves for Dallas, a distracted pilot of a light aircraft takes the wrong runway; the small plane hits the airliner's tail and breaks apart. The elevators jam in the climb position and the trim controls are damaged, leaving the airliner climbing. The engines have to run at full throttle to keep from stalling, and they begin to overheat.
