Plot summary
Candomblé, a faith mixing Catholic and African spiritual elements, is losing ground in Brazil to the neo-charismatic churches, an evangelical branch that has no quarrel with capitalism. Religion earns respect from the authorities, so drug gangs use the churches as moral cover, and the aggressive talk of dealers turned pastors fits the culture of the slums. Fanatical followers declare a spiritual war on popular telenovelas, and gospel funk draws in new believers. Interviews with pastors, gang members and followers of both faiths, set in the suburbs and favelas of Rio de Janeiro and in Belo Horizonte.
