Plot summary
Droste, a naval lieutenant, proposes a permanent air station in mid-ocean where planes on intercontinental routes can refuel and repair damage. The aviator Ellissen helps him win the backing of the Lennartz company for the scheme, called F.P.1. Ellissen is involved with Claire Lennartz, the owner's sister, but he avoids marriage and keeps looking for adventure. Two years later the platform sits in the Atlantic and is ready for use. A storm cuts off radio contact with it, and the last sounds picked up are gunshots and screams. When the weather clears, the leading pilots head for F.P.1, and Claire persuades a lovesick Ellissen to fly her there.
