Plot summary
In Kyiv, the schoolteacher Andrej Romanovic Evilenko is dismissed from his post after an assault on a pupil. His urges and his bitterness at the crumbling Soviet Union drive him to attack and kill women and children. Vadim Timurouvic Lesiev, a magistrate with a family of his own, is assigned to catch the killer, and the psychiatrist Aron Richter is brought in to profile him. Evilenko eludes both men for years. A hypnotic hold on his victims is hinted at, which would explain their lack of resistance. The story is drawn from the crimes of the Soviet killer Andrei Chikatilo, renamed Evilenko here.
