Plot summary
Dr. Pantilat, a palliative care physician at the University of California in San Francisco, visits terminally ill patients to explain what palliative care offers: relief from symptoms, information for difficult decisions and support for their families. Kym Anderson and her husband reject the option, which they describe as kissing it goodbye. At the Zen Caregiving Project, Bruce, 66, has stopped dialysis. Pat Harris, treated for fibroids and uterus cancer, weighs chemotherapy with the help of registered nurses. Dr. BJ Miller encourages Thekla, who has shortness of breath, to become acquainted with death rather than fear it. Mitra, 45, and her relatives, her mother, her husband Hamid and her sister Azita, discuss with the palliative team whether to continue treatment or keep her at home.
