Plot summary
El Chanfle wanted to be a professional soccer player and instead became the water boy and props man at Club América, where he also tends the field. His honesty and his care for the equipment and the pitch do not sit well with the team's coach. The coach asks him to cheat in a match; El Chanfle refuses and is let go from the club. His wife Tere tells him she is expecting their first child, and he looks for ways to bring in more money. He tries to sell a gun, and in the attempt he frightens an old man, who sets out after him. The team's organizers work to repair the club's reputation, and the doctor, El Chanfle's friend, tries to get him his job back.

- Carlos Villagrán (Valentino) and Raúl "Chato" Padilla (Paco) never shared a scene in Chespirito's shows; their only on-screen encounter came by accident in El Chanfle, when Paco, chasing El Chanfle, crashes into Valentino as he is carried to the infirmary. The two had acted together in the 1968 play Historia de un par de piernas.
- Chespirito based El Chanfle on real football figures: Rogelio Cruz "El More", kit man at Puebla for 55 years, and Nacho Trelles, a player and coach.
- In the film's opening, when the line-ups for América versus Puebla are read out, the surnames given to Puebla's players are the surnames of all the actors in the cast.
