Plot summary
Nalini Rao works as an investigative journalist. She publishes a short piece about a rare kind of cotton grown in Talakona, a remote part of Andhra Pradesh. The article brings a reaction from India's top intelligence officers that she finds odd, suggesting the crop and the man who cultivates it are connected to something bigger. She travels to Talakona to look into it. There she meets Sahadev Varma, a cotton farmer who keeps to himself and whose crop is in demand abroad. Villagers regard him with a mixture of fear and respect, and former soldiers and intelligence officers describe him as more than an ordinary farmer.
