Plot summary
A narrator opens the tale of Don Quixote, and Rucio the donkey interrupts to give his own version: the man was not insane but intelligent and full of passion. Rucio wishes he were Quixote's horse, while Rocinante, the horse, hates leaving his stable. Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza have become famous in La Mancha since their journey in search of Dulcinea, whom Sancho says he glimpsed once when Quixote was elsewhere. Carrasco, an old acquaintance who resents their fame, brings news: a figure called the Knight of the Crescent Moon searches the region for Quixote and wants to meet him in Barcelona under the next full moon. Losing means Quixote must give up his knighthood and Dulcinea; winning means the knight will name Dulcinea and hand over his wealth. Quixote accepts.
