Rudolf Klein-Rogge
Biography
Rudolf Klein-Rogge was a German actor who gave silent cinema its archetypal master criminal and mad scientist. He was born in Cologne and trained at a Prussian military academy before studying acting and art history in Berlin and Bonn and making his stage debut in 1909. After close to ten years in theaters along the Rhine and across northern Germany, he began appearing in films in 1919. An early showcase for his gift for villainy came with The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), and his reputation grew through expressionist classics that Thea von Harbou wrote and Fritz Lang directed, above all his title roles in Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler (1922) and The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933). He was King Etzel in Die Nibelungen: Siegfried (1924) and Die Nibelungen: Kriemhild's Revenge (1924), and the scientist C.A. Rothwang in Metropolis (1927). Supporting parts occupied him through the 1930s, and he died in 1955.
