Plot summary
Detective Edward Kennesaw and his less experienced partner Phillip Braxton investigate the killing of a call girl, Elizabeth, whose body was discovered cut in two in a park. They bring in James Wayland, heir to a textile fortune, for questioning. Wayland is an epileptic, and his episodes bring memory lapses and bursts of violence; he also drinks heavily and lies compulsively. Lie detector tests do not pin him down. Braxton owes twenty thousand dollars to an illegal bookmaker, and Kennesaw offers to cover part of that debt. Rich and well informed, Wayland begins to turn the interrogation around on the two officers.
