Plot summary
The marriage of Lee and Vivien Warren has turned into a nightmare. Vivien, his wife, is devious and habitually unfaithful, and Lee is pathologically jealous. He comes back from a long business trip to New York, suspicious because during his absence she had neither written to him nor called. Cards addressed to Vivien and signed Love Always push him further, and he settles on her latest lover, Richard Fenton, as the man he intends to kill. Lee confronts Fenton, who admits to the affair, and persuades him to end it by writing Vivien a farewell letter. Lee means to kill Fenton and to make the death look like suicide, with that letter as the note.
