Plot summary
Tony and Helen, Rod and Susan, and Peter and Anne head through upstate New York toward a lake, the last two following on a motorcycle. On the road they pick up Jack, a hitchhiker who says he knows the area. Night falls before they reach the water, so Rod turns onto a side road, and at its end the group finds an abandoned house and decides to stay. In the yard stands a wrecked, burned car perched on a stone monument, holding a photograph of a young woman and some clothing, which the friends take for a shrine. Inside, sealed coffins and more pictures of the same woman wait in the basement, and the house shows signs of recent use. Helen, frightened by the place, refuses to stay.
