Plot summary

In the countryside of eastern Poland, two tales of women's friendship and witchcraft unfold. Nawoja, a tormented witch, places a dead animal's head under a barn and lays a curse on the comfortable life of her neighbor Bielakowa. Bielakowa brings together an all-female folk band for a rehearsal at her home, though she feels that something evil is entering her world, and the singers become friends. The same group comes back together for another rehearsal many years later, older and still close. Separately, an elderly woman recalls a friend from her girlhood, when the two were inseparable. Those memories gather into the hard lives of women: marriages that came apart, promises that were broken and hopes that faded.
