Plot summary
The town of Dawson City, Yukon, is where 533 reels of nitrate film were found in 1978, lying under the permafrost of a decommissioned swimming pool. The cache, known as the Dawson Film Find, was placed under a hockey rink in 1929 and contains lost shorts, features and newsreels, including footage of the 1919 World Series. The reels also tell the town's story, from Trʼondëk Hwëchʼin lands to a Klondike Gold Rush boomtown and entertainment center, before industrial monopolies and scarce resources changed it.

- The Dawson Film Find, which frames Bill Morrison's documentary, was a cache of 533 nitrate reels buried beneath a hockey rink in 1929 and rediscovered in 1978; the recovered silent films included shorts, features and newsreel footage such as the 1919 World Series.
- Bill Morrison first intended the project to become something like his own 12-minute short The Film of Her (1996), but he came to envision a broader scope as work on it progressed.
- Morrison recruited Alex Somers as the composer after learning that Sigur Ros, the band Somers collaborates with, were fans of Morrison's previous film Decasia (2002).
