Plot summary

James Robertson, an American museum curator in Manila, visits Carlos Ching's antiques shop to buy a painting for the museum. There he finds a canvas from 1592 showing conquistadors executing three women and a dog by fire, and he is startled that one of the women could be his wife, Chris. He takes it home, and Chris is deeply upset by it. She names the Duarte coven and the year of the executions, yet cannot say how she knows either. The next day a dog like the painted one appears, wearing a collar marked Nicodemus. Then Juana Rios comes to the house, saying she is answering an advertisement for a housekeeper the Robertsons never placed. Juana, who resembles a second woman in the painting, insists on remaining to help Chris toward her destiny, and hands her an antique dagger.
