Plot summary
Elizabeth arrives at an island convent in the Black Sea during a rainstorm. Her father has just died, leaving her an orphan, and she has come to decide whether to keep up the donations he made to the place for years. The Mother Superior, an ancient blind woman, greets her. Elizabeth asks after her friend Teresa, who had been living at the convent, and the novice Sarah says Teresa went back to London. Sarah becomes her guide. Elizabeth says she was born on the island and stayed there until she was seven, and that her mother died giving birth to her.

- Political upheaval twice threatened the shoot: while Andy Bark and Mariano Baino were raising finance, a coup attempt put tanks on the streets of Moscow, and at the end of filming Baino, in Moscow for dubbing, was woken by gunfire.
- Dark Waters is described as perhaps the first Western film to be shot in Ukraine following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
- The film grew out of a short story by co-writer Andy Bark, which was inspired by a childhood visit to Staithes in North Yorkshire.
