Plot summary

Crownsville State Hospital opened in Crownsville, Maryland, in 1910. It was the third asylum in the country built for African-American patients only. From 1962 the hospital accepted mental patients of any race. It closed on June 30, 2004, after 96 years, and its buildings have stood empty since. The documentary sets present-day exterior and interior photographs and footage beside archival images of the same spaces, and adds animation and original music. Historians, former hospital workers and former patients describe the hospital in interviews. Its makers took inspiration from earlier documentaries, among them Night and Fog and The Thin Blue Line.
