Plot summary
A cargo ship drifts into New York Harbor with no one aboard. A boarding party finds the mutilated remains of the crew, containers of coffee, and, hidden among them, football-sized green eggs. When disturbed, the eggs burst and spray a liquid that makes human bodies explode. Colonel Stella Holmes takes charge of the military response and connects the eggs to a recent mission to Mars, where one astronaut vanished and the other, Commander Hubbard, came back broken and drinking. Hubbard agrees to help. With the sarcastic New York cop Tony Aris, Holmes follows the trail of the eggs to a coffee plantation in Colombia.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Contamination (1980)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Cozzi wanted stop-motion or animation for the alien cyclops at the film's climax but was overruled, and the animatronic built instead barely moved, so he used rapid jump cuts to hide stagehands pulling it around.
- Cozzi wanted Caroline Munro, who had been featured in his Starcrash, as Colonel Holmes, but the producer overruled him and hired Canadian actress Louise Marleau instead.
- Budget limits pushed director Luigi Cozzi to set his Alien-inspired story on Earth, keeping the alien eggs and a large creature from Ridley Scott's film; he wrote a script called Alien Arrives on Earth.
- Producer Claudio Mancini took the title Contamination from an aborted film he was developing based on The China Syndrome, renaming Cozzi's film against his wishes and pushing more James Bond-style elements into it.
- Cozzi's production offices shared a building with the makers of Zombi 2, and that film's profits persuaded him to try hiring its cast; in the end only Ian McCulloch worked on Contamination.
