Plot summary
John Bolen arrives at a Bend, Oregon high school as its substitute teacher and clashes with students who skip class. In Monroeville, California, teacher Jenna McKensie faces pressure from Sanders, a gang leader she saw pull a gun on a student, to stay quiet before a court date. Her boyfriend, Emmett Grazer, keeps chasing Sanders away, which Jenna resents, since she feels she can manage without him. Emmett runs the town's small military museum, and John, drawn by an advertisement for it, shows interest in the military gear kept there. Sheriff Tom Yost notices a Special Forces tattoo on John's arm and asks about his military past. Jenna also draws heat from the school administration over what she witnessed.
