Plot summary
Andrew Norris joins the staff at Lincoln High School, an inner city school where guards frisk and scan everyone who comes through the door. On his first day he meets Terry Corrigan, another teacher, who is carrying a gun and says Andrew will learn why the protection is necessary. Graffiti covers the halls, and Andrew is told to patrol them during his free periods. Peter Stegman and four friends disrupt his first class, though only Peter is enrolled in it. The gang deals drugs at the school. Andrew finds students who do want to learn, among them Arthur on trumpet and Deneen on clarinet, and he plans an orchestra with his more advanced players.
