Plot summary
Oscar is a young chimpanzee in his toddler years who lives with a close-knit chimpanzee tribe in Taï National Park in Ivory Coast. Their forest territory holds native fruits, nuts and figs. They hunt small tree monkeys, eat termites taken with stick tools, and crack nuts with rocks. Oscar's mother, Isha, tends him and he begins to learn from her how to survive in the jungle. In an attack by a rival chimpanzee gang led by Scar, Isha is hurt and cut off from the group and from Oscar.

Although studies suggest that chimpanzees are capable of committing acts of altruism, Oscar's adoption is the first instance of such an action by the species to be documented on film.- The film took over four years to create, because of the difficulty of filming in Taï National Park during the wet season and of capturing usable footage of common chimpanzees, a species known to act reclusive to human activity.
