Plot summary
Commuters in a Bucharest subway station walk past the children who live there, ages eight to sixteen. They sleep on cardboard boxes on the train platforms or in the parks above ground, and they get high by breathing Aurolac, an industrial adhesive, from plastic bags. Cristina Ionescu, sixteen, who spent her early life in an orphanage, leads the group and looks boyish, as girls on the street must seem tough. Violeta Rosu, fourteen, called Macarena after her favorite song, is quiet and more addicted to Aurolac than the others. Mihai, twelve, who ran away from home at eight, refuses to beg and stocks shelves for shopkeepers instead. Ana, ten, brought her brother Marian, eight, to the streets with her.
