Plot summary
On a Nebraska farm, brothers Joshua and Eli Porter hide in a cornfield from their abusive father. Eli stays behind, rebukes him, and uses a pagan Bible to call on He Who Walks Behind the Rows, which turns the cornstalks on the man. William and Amanda Porter of Chicago then take the two boys in. Their formal clothes from Gatlin and Eli's suitcase of corn strike their new parents and neighbors as strange, and Eli nearly fights a student named T-Loc at school.
