Plot summary
Tolzbad sits in the mountains, where a loud noise or a strong feeling can bring down an avalanche, so the townspeople hold their emotions in check. The highest ambition there is to serve the reclusive Count Knotkers, and Johann and Grigorss are training toward that as butlers. Their mother Zenaida loves them both and hates their brother Franz, who lives exiled in the attic. Johann is promised to Klara, the daughter of Herr Trotta, while Grigorss keeps a secret love for her.

- At one point, Martin Scorsese had agreed to take the role of Count Knotkers in the film, but he bowed out to complete Cape Fear.
- The filmmaker Maddin pursued casting the hockey star Bobby Hull in the film, but ended up casting Paul Cox instead.
- Although Careful was not a commercial success elsewhere, it single-handedly saved a struggling art-house cinema in Missoula, Montana, where sell-out crowds filled the house twice every night for two weeks.
