Plot summary
In the 1940s, as Japanese rule over Taiwan was ending, a teacher in Hengchun loved a local girl named Kojima Tomoko, and she planned to leave with him for Japan. After the surrender he had to go home, and on the voyage he wrote her seven letters of regret. More than sixty years later Aga, a rock band singer, leaves Taipei for Hengchun, where his stepfather, a town council representative, arranges a postman's job for him, and he comes across that undeliverable package.

- When Cape No. 7 went over budget, director Wei Te-sheng refinanced his home and pushed his family NT$30 million (about US$900,000) into debt before release; cast members Pei-Chen Lee and Chang Hsin-yan said he could barely afford film rolls and crew lodging.
- The story came from a July 2004 report Wei Te-sheng read about a Yunlin postman who delivered mail addressed in the old Japanese style to the sender's former Japanese employer; Wei made the film hoping to finance his long-planned epic Seediq Bale.
- Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits chairman Chen Yunlin praised the film after a private screening, then reversed himself in Beijing, calling it "marred by the shadow of Japanization" and recommending it be banned in mainland China; the censored PRC version ran only 100 minutes, losing Hokkien slang, foul words and a scene of Old Mao speaking Japanese.
- On 1 November 2008 the film became the second highest-grossing film in Taiwan's cinematic history, behind James Cameron's Titanic, and it is currently the highest-grossing Taiwanese domestic film.
- The closing scene of the Japanese teacher and other Japanese leaving Taiwan by ship was filmed in an abandoned brewery in Taichung with more than 500 extras.
