Plot summary
Joe Braxton is a convict in Philadelphia who violates his parole in a failed attempt to steal televisions from a store. A judge gives him another chance, and his parole officer, Donald, has a job for him. Donald is involved with Vivian Perry, a schoolteacher whose school the city has just shut down because of budget cuts. Most of her students have been placed elsewhere, but eight children in special education still need a home. Vivian intends to move them to her aunt's farm in Washington State in an old bus. Donald first has Joe tell her the bus will not work, then has Joe repair it and drive the group west.
