Plot summary
Inspector Miguel Ramos of the Manila homicide squad has a run of dead young women on his hands. Each body is found with matching cuts on the inner forearm and drained of blood, and Miguel has heard rumors of a strange blood cult. The latest victim, Maria Cortez, worked at the Barrio Club, so he calls in Adam Rourke, a New York sex-crimes specialist. Adam suggests going undercover there as an American writer, and Miguel agrees on the condition that the two men have no contact while Adam is inside. The club's owner, Calderon, is slow to cooperate, and its dancer, Serena, draws Adam's attention. Sylvia, Miguel's adopted sister, takes an instant dislike to Adam, and a machete-wielding intruder comes for him in his hotel room.
