Plot summary
In 1975, Ingrid holds a post at the Chilean Intelligence Directorate, the secret police of Augusto Pinochet's military government. Her German Shepherd, her body, her fears and her frustrations fill her private hours. The character draws on Íngrid Olderöck, a major in the police and an agent of the directorate, though the intent is not a biography. A hidden life is what the piece visits, and through it a country split by wounds that have not healed. The animation is stop motion, and the figure was modeled on the look of porcelain dolls so that her face stays blank and cold.
Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Bestia (2021)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The main character of Bestia is inspired by Íngrid Olderöck, a police major and DINA agent during the Chilean military dictatorship, who was responsible for human rights violations in that period.
- Bestia was nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 94th Academy Awards, making it the second Chilean animated short ever nominated, after Bear Story in 2016, which won the award. It had first made the shortlist.
- The protagonist was designed to look like a porcelain doll, to convey the character's coldness and inexpressiveness, and was built from polyurethane resin bathed in crystal resin so her face had a ceramic-like texture. The sets used opaque cardboards to contrast with the resin's brightness.
- Hugo Covarrubias set out to tell parts of Chilean history through lesser-known, darker characters, and the project was originally meant to be an animated series. He then chose one of those stories and turned it into a single short film.
