Plot summary
In September 1950, during the Korean War, U.S. Navy pilot Neil Smith crash-lands in a remote mountain area of Korea after his plane flies into a storm of butterflies. Villagers from nearby Dongmakgol find him and nurse him back to health. The village is isolated and its residents know nothing of modern technology or the war. A North Korean platoon is ambushed, and three survivors, Rhee Soo-hwa, Jang Young-hee and Seo Taek-gi, escape through a mountain passage. Yeo-il, an absent-minded girl from Dongmakgol, leads them into the village, where they find two South Korean deserters, Pyo Hyun-chul and Moon Sang-sang. The encounter triggers a standoff between the two sides.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Park Kwang-hyun wrote the script while listening to Joe Hisaishi's music, and after producer Lee Eun-ha sent Hisaishi a heartfelt letter and a Japanese translation of the script, Hisaishi agreed to score the film, choosing it as his first ever Korean movie.
- Welcome to Dongmakgol, made by Jang Jin's small company Film It Suda with no big stars, was budgeted modestly, but filming and post-production CGI ran much longer than expected and the budget skyrocketed, putting the company in trouble; failure would have been catastrophic for it.
