Plot summary
Cody, Abby, their baby brother Fig Newton and Abby's friend Marcella arrive at the Greenfield farm in Merrivale for a week of summer break. Cody dislikes the trip, and the girls tease him with a Barney doll. In the bathroom, the doll turns into the talking dinosaur Barney, who plays with the girls in the barn while Cody insists he is not real. That evening Barney tells Cody to wish upon a star, and a shooting star becomes an egg that rolls into the barn. They find it the next morning as it begins to change colors. At neighbor Mrs. Goldfinch's they learn the egg falls every thousand years and hatches a Dreammaker only if it rests where it first landed before its colors finish changing. Cody accidentally sends it rolling onto a birdseed truck.

- Trey Parker, co-creator of South Park, was offered $1.5 million to direct the film after the underground success of his short The Spirit of Christmas, because producers thought his humor with children suited him. He declined.
- While the film was in development around the mid-1990s, every major studio wanted a Barney feature, and one studio assembled its executives to sing "I Love You" to Sheryl Leach when she arrived.
- Actress Mara Wilson was offered a role in the film but turned it down out of frustration at being branded in "cute" movies.
- It was announced in July 1996 that John Travolta, Demi Moore, Rosie O'Donnell, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver were expected to make cameos in the film, but none of those cameos appear in the finished movie.
- Donald O'Connor, the dancer, singer and actor, was willing to play Grandpa Greenfield, but the film's producers turned him down, according to screenwriter Stephen White.
- Writer Stephen White's first script was cut down for being too long; in it the egg hatched a giant bird that misses its mother, Baby Bop and B.J. had farmhouse-attic scenes scrapped by director Steve Gomer as "unaffordable", and the gang would have built a plane from cardboard boxes.
- Barney's Great Adventure is the only Barney film to be released in theaters; every other Barney film, before and after, went straight to video.
