Plot summary
The wars are over, and the Interstellar Alliance keeps the peace among its member worlds through the Rangers, an elite force of hand-picked humans and Minbari who serve it. David Martell, a Ranger punished for pulling back from a fight, receives command of the Liandra, a twenty-year-old Minbari fighting ship that carries a reputation for being haunted. He is to escort a Valen-class cruiser carrying diplomats, Ambassador G'Kar among them, to a secret archaeological dig, the oldest city on record, and to whatever clue it holds about a dangerous ancient race. Their mission brings them into contact with an unknown and ancient force, The Hand, whose lethal power is greater than any the Alliance has met.
