Plot summary

A warlord has been killed, and the bandit Singh Khan stands trial for it. The warlord's wife, the bandit and a shaman who can summon the dead man's spirit each give their own version of the killing, and their accounts do not agree. A young monk who heard them all is deeply troubled. He sets out to ask his father for counsel, but a storm catches him on the road and forces him into an abandoned burial tunnel, where a poor man who had spoken at the trial is also sheltering. An old beggar joins them, and the three fall into an argument about the testimony.
