Plot summary
In a small town in southern Germany, on the banks of the Rhine, a Russian traveler called N. N. makes the acquaintance of two compatriots, Gagin and Gagin's sister Asya. There is mountain scenery around the town, and a party of students is there. Asya's behavior is at times odd, and the strength of her love frightens N. N. She and N. N. fall in love, and it is for him to decide whether to take the next step.
