Plot summary
In Edwardian Cheshire, the fatherless seventeen-year-old Angel Deverell lives above her mother's grocery shop and writes novels of impossible romance, certain she will be a great writer. A London publisher accepts one of her manuscripts, and other novels follow; her books find a wide audience and the royalties let her buy Paradise, a grand country house, and live as an aristocrat. She meets Nora at an event, and Nora admires her writing and becomes her secretary; Angel also sees Nora's brother Esmé, a would-be painter, whom she falls in love with. He is not interested, and Angel, grandly self-centered, pursues him.

- The director said the character of Angel was inspired by Marie Corelli, Queen Victoria's favorite writer and one of the first authors to become a star; her bestsellers for an adoring public are now totally forgotten, even in England.
- Angel's outdoor scenes were shot in bitterly cold weather: the camera froze after a few minutes of filming and had to be taken inside and warmed with hot towels before going out again, which the actors did not mind as they warmed up too.
- The director said he saw many actresses for the role of Nora in Angel, and during the screen tests realized many of them actually wanted to play Angel and had no desire for a supporting role; Lucy Russell didn't mind.
