Plot summary
A jazz funeral opens the film, its music starting slow and turning joyful. At Frankie and Johnny's, a lesson follows in how to eat crayfish. St. Patrick's Day is celebrated out on the streets, because New Orleans keeps its holidays in public. The run-up to Mardi Gras reaches back to slavery: enslaved people were given Sundays to gather and ready themselves for the one holiday they were allowed to keep. The Wild Tchoupitoulas, a Mardi Gras Indian society, sew costumes in thanks for help Native Americans once gave enslaved people, and the group sings and parades through the carnival. Second-line parades and the cooking of red beans and rice are among the traditions filmed in New Orleans in 1977.

- Always for Pleasure subtitles a Creole song as "Hey Legba", although its title phrase is actually "Eh là-bas", a formerly common Louisiana Creole greeting roughly meaning "Hey you over there". Some scholars, such as Henry Louis Gates, believe "Eh La Bas" is a covert reference to Legba.
