Plot summary
Rod Hamilton, a jazz enthusiast with money, cannot hold all-night jam sessions at his Mayfair house, so he has fitted out a warehouse beside the Thames for them. There he gives a party marking one year of marriage for Aurelius Rex, who leads a band and plays piano, and for Delia Lane, a singer who has retired. Johnny Cousin, Rex's drummer, has been working to launch a group of his own. He has Rod's money arranged for it and Lou Berger, a booking agent, interested, and both are backing him on the understanding that Delia will sing with him. Delia tells Johnny during the party that she is staying retired, because she fears it would strain her marriage. Johnny then begins a series of schemes to separate her from Rex.

- Blacklisted screenwriter Paul Jarrico was credited on the film as "Peter Achilles"; in 1998 the Writers Guild of America West restored his credit for this film and three others.
- Betsy Blair, who plays Emily, was also blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee. Her then-husband Gene Kelly intervened to get her the part in Marty (1955), which brought her an Academy Award nomination, but she eventually had to move to Europe to pursue her career.
- On the soundtrack, drummer Allan Ganley performs the drum parts for Patrick McGoohan's character, even though McGoohan learned to play the drums for the film.
