Plot summary
Ai Weiwei works from a studio compound in Beijing called 258 Fake, which is home to 40 cats. He prepares for a show in Munich and a ceramic piece at the Tate Modern while his clashes with the Chinese government increase. For his Sichuan Earthquake Names Project, more than fifty volunteers and researchers collect the names of students who died in the May 2008 earthquake in Sichuan province towns, names Ai culled from his blog on Sina.com. On 12 May 2009 he finishes posting over 5,000 names.

- Director Alison Klayman first met Ai Weiwei in December 2008 in Beijing while she was producing TV and radio features for PBS Frontline, NPR and AP Television, and she filmed a short video for his show "New York Photographs 1983 - 1993" at Beijing's Three Shadows Photography Art Centre.
- Ai Weiwei's Sichuan Earthquake Names Project, shown in the film, involved more than 50 volunteers and researchers collecting the names of students killed in Sichuan province; Ai finished posting over 5,000 names on 12 May 2009, and two and a half weeks later Chinese authorities shut down his blog.
