Plot summary
When a Japanese submarine torpedoes his ship, merchant marine boatswain Harry Patterson is set adrift with a few shipmates. One of them, Mudgin, prays for rescue and vows to give up women, liquor and fighting; a plane appears and they are saved. In San Francisco for rest and recreation, Mudgin breaks every promise and comes to believe he has lost his soul. Harry takes him to the public library for information on the subject, and there they meet Emily Sears, a reserved librarian. Harry's wiseguy remarks anger her, and his attention turns to her outgoing roommate, Helen Melohn, who has stopped by to walk Emily home. Harry and Helen arrange a date, and persuade a reluctant Emily to join them.
