Plot summary

Malta, in the late 1300s. Five soldiers have survived a battle against invaders and are making their way home across different lands. The journey has left them hungry and exhausted. When they come upon a fort, they ask for food and a place to sleep for the night, intending to stay only once. Inside the fort, the people behave in ways the soldiers find peculiar. Four of the five decide to ignore what they see. Tristan, the fifth, cannot help getting involved in what is happening there, and he takes it further than the other four soldiers do.
