Plot summary
Gojun Pye trains Marek in more advanced magic and gives her a staff, warning that her necromancer powers draw on life force and can pull her toward darkness. He tells her of the Red Thorns, the sorcerers who once stood against Szorlok, who seeks to become the Lich King and needs other necromancers at his side, Marek among them. Szorlok already holds two shards of the Darkspore. Marek and her companions are known at Hammerhead's tavern and take the Red Thorns as their name. When Peregus Malister, master of the Thieves Guild, takes Thane hostage in revenge for being forced to sign for her freedom, Marek must serve the Guild and recover ilystrium from The Eel.
