Plot summary
Fort Canby is a remote, understaffed cavalry post in Arizona, commanded by Captain Stephen Maddocks, a veteran of Indian fighting whose career stalled after a past mistake. Into it comes 1st Lt. Curtis McQuade, an officer with no field experience who was born at the post when his father commanded it. He believes his childhood knowledge of the West is enough to command men in the field; Maddocks demonstrates that it is not. On the day McQuade reports, the post buries four troopers cut down in a running fight with hostiles believed to be Comanches, and takes in a small girl, the only survivor of a ranch family's killing. Tracey Hamilton, McQuade's former sweetheart, is visiting to marry Lt. Tom Gresham, and McQuade renews their affair.
