Plot summary
Murray Burns left his job supplying gags to a children's show about a chipmunk five months ago. He lives in a cluttered studio apartment with his nephew Nick, twelve, the son of Murray's sister, who left the boy in his care seven years before. When Nick writes a school essay praising unemployment insurance, the school asks New York State to check on how he lives. Sandra Markowitz of the Child Welfare Board and her superior Albert Amundson, who are also a couple, tell Murray he must prove he can be a capable guardian or lose Nick. Sandra, taken with the uncle and the boy, urges Murray to find work.
