Plot summary
Detective Emily Eden works homicide in New York City. While she and her partner Nick try to arrest two drug dealers, Nick is stabbed; Emily shoots one of the dealers, and her superior Lt. Oliver takes her gun away for a time. Once Nick is in the hospital and the dealers are held, Emily goes undercover to look into the killing of Yaakov Klausman, a Hasidic diamond-cutter. She alters her appearance and stays with the household of the rebbe, an elderly Holocaust survivor. There she meets his son Ariel, a diamond-cutter who also teaches at the yeshiva; the community expects him to become the next rebbe. Ariel observes all 613 Mitzvot and is waiting for Shayna Singer, the woman chosen for him in an arranged marriage, whom he has not met. Emily is drawn to him.
