Plot summary
Daniel Pearl, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal, and his wife Mariane, also a journalist, are among the reporters who travel to Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 attacks. From there they go to Pakistan, where Mariane is visibly pregnant, and they work in Karachi with their colleague Asra Nomani. Daniel leaves to interview Sheikh Gilani and does not come back; his cell phone goes unanswered. Mariane appeals for help, which comes first from Javed Habib, the chief of Pakistan's CID, then from FBI agents and personnel at the American embassy. The disappearance brings a storm of media attention, and Pakistan's interior minister faults Daniel for the subjects he was investigating.

- Because the production feared for the safety of star Angelina Jolie and the rest of the cast and crew in Karachi, the vast majority of the film, though set there, was actually shot in Pune, India.
- Before the production was even officially announced, director Michael Winterbottom quietly traveled to Karachi with co-star Dan Futterman and a skeleton crew to shoot for ten days at the real locations where the events had taken place.
- Casting Angelina Jolie as Mariane Pearl drew criticism within the African-American community from pop critic Orville Lloyd Douglas, who objected that Jolie is white while Pearl is the multiracial daughter of an Afro-Chinese-Cuban mother and a Dutch Jewish father.
- Mariane Pearl personally picked Angelina Jolie to play her, telling critics of the choice that it was not about skin color but about a personal kinship she felt with Jolie, who she said was 'way more beautiful' than herself.

Kidnapper Omar Sheikh, who claimed responsibility for kidnapping and beheading Daniel Pearl, was captured and convicted in the real case behind the film, though he was still appealing that conviction.
