Plot summary
Mary Daas, a fine artist, brings her toddler son Nello through a blizzard to the forest home of her father, Jehan Daas, and asks him to care for the boy. Jehan keeps that promise, and the two make ends meet by delivering milk to Antwerp, where the townspeople know them. In the woods they find a Bouvier beaten and left for dead, nurse the dog back to health, and Nello names him Patrasche. Nello draws, practices his art under Jehan's eye, and introduces Patrasche to Aloise, his friend and model, whose father owns the local mill. Nello and Jehan also have to deal with their landlord Stephens, and the painter Michel La Grande takes an interest in the boy's art.
