Plot summary
Sally is the manicurist in a Devon barber shop, where Joe, the barber's assistant, is infatuated with her. He takes her out one evening, and it goes awkwardly, making plain that she does not return his feelings. A misunderstanding over a floral buttonhole deepens his infatuation into obsession. Harry, a young gentleman farmer who is a regular client at the salon, begins to court Sally, whose response is far warmer. The two arrange an evening at the cinema in town. Joe follows them there unnoticed and sits behind them, watching their happiness before rushing out of the cinema in despair.
